Traywick Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition featuring new work by Charles LaBelle. The exhibition opens Saturday, September 14th and continues through Saturday, October 19th, 2002, and will run concurrently with the backroom show, Ken Fandell: Video and Photographs. There will be a reception for the artists on Saturday, September 14th, from 5 to 7 pm.

Holiday brings together works in various media – including photography, video, sculpture and drawing – through which LaBelle addresses the question of how an individual locates themselves in a world whose very geographical and ideological boundaries are increasingly blurred.

The work in Holiday constructs a travelogue documenting both a physical journey and a flight of imagination. Infused with a desire for a genuine connection with the world, LaBelle’s work veers between displacement and discovery.

Los Angeles-based artist Charles LaBelle has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. This will be his second solo exhibition at Traywick Gallery. Other recent solo shows include exhibitions at Roberts & Tilton Gallery, Los Angeles; Bodybuilder and Sportsman Gallery in Chicago; Rebecca Ibel Gallery, Columbus, OH and the Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara. His work has also been included in exhibitions at Ten in One Gallery, New York; Post, Los Angeles; Sala Dias, San Antonio, TX; Rogaland Kunstmuseum, Stavanger, Norway; Walter McBean Gallery, San Francisco Art Institute; Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions and Muller-deChiara Gallery, Berlin. In 2000 he was named a recipient of the prestigious Getty Trust Fellowship.
