Traywick Contemporary is pleased to announce Another Country, a solo exhibition by Bay Area artist Lena Wolff. This will be Wolff's second solo show with Traywick Contemporary.

Lena Wolff is inspired by handcrafted traditions, borrowing methodology from textile processes and quilt making. Combining paper cutouts and collage with physical manipulations of surface including pinpricks and hole punches, she couples traditional media and sources with an assertive contemporary aesthetic. The labor-intensive and hand-driven process behind Wolff's intricate works on paper is at once tactile, meditative and intimate.

Another Country, a nod to James Baldwin's novel of the same title, features new works on paper that draw on the varied evocations of the term country. The work combines poetic cartography, imagined flags of fictional countries and abstract geometric pieces that draw from early American quilt traditions. Blending invention with mythologized elements of local culture, the series explores broad ideas related to an awareness of paradise lost and visions about potential alternate realities.

The delicate balance of interrelationships, dynamic organization and concepts of symbolic storytelling are central to Wolff's body of work. Blurring the earthly and spiritual, allusions to animism vivify many of her pieces with the powerful force of nature. The vibrational aspects of color engage rhythm and repetition to imbue other, more abstract works with a similar sense of aliveness.

Wolff has exhibited locally at the San Francisco Fine Arts Museum's Legion of Honor, the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, Southern Exposure, and Headlands Center for the Arts. She recently received commissions for public projects from both the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Alameda County Arts Commission. Lena Wolff is also the curator of Paper Quilt Project: Collaborations in Contemporary Craft, showing concurrently at Berkeley Arts Center, www.berkeleyartscenter.org.
