Traywick Contemporary is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings and works on paper by Los Angeles artist Samantha Fields. This will be her first solo show with Traywick Contemporary.
In this body of work, Fields immortalizes points in time that are relished, lost and longed for in a single instant—what the artist calls "halcyon moments." Her paintings are documents of these otherwise ephemeral occurrences: smoke lingering in the sky after a firework has faded, the blur of colored city lights reflected on wet pavement, or transient shadows shifting across a nighttime landscape.
Fields' paintings are based on images culled from her archive of photographs shot while investigating peculiarities of light and landscape phenomena. The selected images highlight irregularities in documentation; her compositions are veiled with sunspots, blurred with motion or obscured through layers of mist and fog. Translated into paint, these visual imperfections heighten the experiential nature of Fields' work, immersing the viewer in the mood of a specific time and place.
What a camera can record in a split second takes longer to translate into painting, complicating our expectations of photographs as instantaneous replications of an observed reality. Fields uses an airbrush to apply hundreds of thinly misted layers of acrylic paint to canvas or paper, creating rich, almost incandescent, surfaces. By focusing on representations of memory, enigmatic and unfixed, Fields expressively captures the energy and emotion of a fleeting moment.
Samantha Fields lives and works in Los Angeles. In 2012, she was awarded a prestigious City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Grant. Her exhibition history includes shows at the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena; the Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum, Cranbrook, WI; The Jones Center for Contemporary Art, Austin, TX; the Lancaster Museum of Art & History, Lancaster, CA; and the Irvine Fine Arts Center, Irvine, CA.
