Dharma Strasser MacColl: Roam

March 4 – May 19, 2018

Traywick Contemporary is pleased to announce Roam, an exhibition of new ceramic sculpture and works on paper by Bay Area artist Dharma Strasser MacColl in her fourth solo show at the gallery.

The work featured in Roam came out of an unexpected year the artist spent living in The Netherlands. MacColl extensively photographed and documented her journeys through Northern Europe and returned to her California studio with an expansive visual diary of her time abroad. The photos captured the wide range of her visual inspirations—from rusted keys at a flea market in Portugal, to a large-scale installation of elaborate beaded necklaces at Maxxi, the modern art museum of Rome. The titles of each piece reference specific places and cities, an homage to a year of wonder and wanderlust.

MacColl’s recent works on paper start with painted marks in gouache and culminate in multi-layered surfaces to which she has added other materials such as porcelain, black clay, thread, felt, leather and even feathers. The physical properties of the materials are a primary focus in some works, while in others, it is the capacity for communicating motion through an accumulation of lines or marks. Strings of colors and bursting forms reel across the page while vibrant textures and colors emerge from deep black papers that bring to mind details from Dutch Golden Age botanical and still life painting.

MacColl’s practice has embraced a long-term dedication to drawing and painting in three dimensions. In Roam, this focus continues through new ceramic sculptures that amass within frames, drape off the wall and pool on the floor. In both her medium-defying works on paper and in her new sculptures, MacColl strikes a thoughtful balance between the abstract and the referential as objects from real life morph into gestural patterns and tactile compositions. Her unique approach with textural mark-making, and a physical building of forms, results in work that challenges the conventional definitions of the ceramic medium.

Dharma Strasser MacColl has exhibited her work extensively throughout the Bay Area and across the country since receiving her MFA degree from the Cranbrook Academy of art in 1997. Her work is held in noted private and public collections including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; as well as Fidelity Investments, the Chevron Corporation and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
