Rachel Davis: New Watercolors

October 24 – November 30, 2002

As part of our ongoing series of exhibitions located in our backroom space, Traywick Gallery is pleased to announce a project featuring new watercolors by Rachel Davis. The exhibition opens October 24th, continues through October 19th, 2002 and will run concurrently with Jamie Brunson: New Paintings. There will be a reception for the artists on Thursday, October 26th, from 6 to 8 pm.

Bay Area artist Rachel Davis paints in watercolor on paper to create radiant abstract works that have an unusual combination of intensity and restraint. She has an ongoing fascination with what she terms ‘the science of the small’ — a reference to her focus on cellular forms and their cycle of life, both real and imagined. Her work reflects her interest in science and genetics in particular, and how vast, invisible systems can ultimately determine a life.

While these scientific and cultural issues are at the core of her work, Davis retains an immediacy that is a direct result of certain clarity in her pared-down abstractions. With visual references to the architecture of both the cellular world and the man-made world, she speaks eloquently about the underlying, unifying structure of life.

Born in the United Kingdom, Davis received her fine arts degree from the University of Michigan School of Art and currently lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area.
