Traywick Contemporary is pleased to announce Wall Works, a group exhibition featuring site-specific wall drawings and installations by five artists: Amy Berk (San Francisco), Charles Goldman (Brooklyn and Oakland), Benicia Gantner (Los Angeles), Kelsey Nicholson (Oakland) and Stas Orlovski (Los Angeles). The exhibition will be available for viewing at our Berkeley space by appointment from January through June, 2005.
The five artists included in Wall Works were invited to create works directly on the walls of Traywick Contemporary’s Berkeley space. The artists represent a range of differing practices and approaches to material — from precise draftsmanship using charcoal and silver point to abstract geometry using highlighters and other office supplies. For some artists it will be the first opportunity to create a large-scale work directly on the wall.
In conceiving and executing their work, each artist dealt with the constraints and possibilities of the architectural space and considered the customary ways the occupants move through and use the space. Utilizing the entryway, the stairwell and other unexpected spaces, the artists chose specific locations that related to their modes of working and that reflected their unique negotiations with the spatial characteristics they encountered.
